Prepare for a Shinrin Yoku Session

Everything you need to know before joining me for a restorative Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing+) session at King’s Wood, Challock - including where to meet, what to expect and how to prepare for a comfortable morning in the forest.

We’ll take a gentle, unhurried walk through the woodland, following forest paths and pausing regularly along the way. We won’t cover a long distance or walk at a fast pace - the emphasis is on noticing what is around us rather than reaching a destination.

Before your session

Please complete the Registration Form no later than the Friday before your session. This gives me time to understand any individual needs and make suitable adjustments for the session.

A completed Registration Form is required before you can take part. Please also read the Terms and Conditions before attending.

What to expect

During our two hours together, we will walk slowly through the woodland, pausing regularly for gentle sensory and mindfulness invitations designed to help calm the mind and body. There will be opportunities for quiet reflection, connection and rest, with a longer relaxation towards the end of the session when you may choose to sit or lie down. I will have groundsheets for you.

This is not a strenuous walk, but the route includes uneven woodland ground and may not be suitable for wheelchair users or people with significant mobility difficulties. Please contact me before booking if you have any concerns, and I’ll be happy to discuss whether the session is right for you.

What to wear

Because we will be walking slowly and spending periods of time being still, the woodland can feel cooler than you might expect, regardless of the weather and season. Wearing the right clothing and footwear can make all the difference between feeling cold or uncomfortable and being able to fully relax, let go and immerse yourself in the experience.

What to wear in warmer weather

Even in summer, the forest can feel cooler beneath the tree canopy - especially when we slow down or pause for periods of stillness. Wear comfortable layers, including a lightweight long-sleeved top and long trousers to help protect against ticks, insects and woodland plants. Choose sturdy walking shoes or boots with good grip, and bring a light waterproof jacket in case the weather changes.

What to wear in colder weather

During autumn and winter, staying warm and dry is essential. Wear warm layers, including thermals when needed, with long trousers and a waterproof coat. Waterproof trousers can also make the experience more comfortable in wet weather. Choose sturdy, waterproof walking boots with good grip and ankle support, and bring a warm hat, gloves and an extra layer.

As some of the invitations involve the sense of smell, please avoid wearing strongly scented perfume or cosmetics so that everyone can notice the forest’s more subtle natural scents. I will provide something for you to lie on during the relaxation part of the session.

What to bring

A small backpack will allow you to keep your hands free throughout the session. You may also want to bring: water, hot drink, snacks, medication, tissues, sun cream, insect repellent -umbrella

Weather

Forest Bathing+ is an all-weather activity, and experiencing the forest in the rain can be especially sensory and restorative. Sessions will only be changed or cancelled if conditions make it unsafe to continue, such as high winds, thunderstorms or other extreme weather.

Please check the Met Office forecast for Challock nearer the time and look out for an email from me with any final weather guidance. Please check your inbox the day before your session in case there are any important updates.

Facilities

There are no toilets at King’s Wood. The nearest facilities are at The Stag in Challock, so you may wish to stop there before arriving.

If you feel unwell

Please do not attend if you feel unwell or have symptoms of an infectious illness. Contact me as early as possible and I will arrange for your booking to be moved to another available date.
